More Information

Our Town is Michael von Graffenried’s photographic portrait of New Bern, a small town in North Carolina on the east coast of the USA with a population of 30,000. The population is 55 percent white and 33 percent black. Here, at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, Christoph von Graffenried from Bern in Switzerland, an ancestor of the author, built the first houses in 1710 and gave the place the name of his home town.

The photographs taken by Michael von Graffenried over a period of 15 years are neither overly formal compositions nor fleeting snapshots, but patient images of everyday life that do not presume to pass judgment on the town’s citizens. We see a black church congregation, young white girls practicing their guns, black men exchanging cash on the street, a white couple showing off their gun collection with a stuffed bear as a hunting trophy, a black stripper dancing for a white man.

In June 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, a black man, by white police officers, the largest demonstration New Bern has ever seen took place, alongside many protests by the Black Lives Matter movement across the country. This was the first time that racism had been made a public issue in the city.

Munich locals look forward to their Oktoberfest all year round. When the time finally comes, locals and tourists who have traveled to the festival put on their lederhosen and dirndls and throw themselves into the hustle and bustle of the Wiesn. Where seven million liters of beer are poured in a very short space of time, boundaries are quickly crossed: Beer corpses sleeping off their intoxication line the green areas behind the festival tents, which are used as toilets. Police and emergency doctors are in high season. Every year, the inhibition threshold drops and the state of emergency intensifies. Michael von Graffenried shows the darker side of what is probably the most famous folk festival in the world. His pictures make no distinction between the fun in the beer tent and the delirium away from the crowds.
